Giving back this Christmas

Winter is the busiest time of the year for food banks, and this winter is expected to be no different, with many facing challenges to afford just the essentials.

Having supported the Canterbury Food Bank for several years, our Kent regional team again donated generously, with items from the everyday essentials needed, but also the more enjoyable items such as advent calendars, chocolates and other fun items to make this season that little bit more special.

According to The Standard, National Debtline has estimated 6.5 million individuals will find it difficult to heat their home this holiday season, while another 2.7 million will have to decide between buying food and presents. Another separate survey found more than half of young people and renters in Britain are worried about the cost of Christmas.

Canterbury Food Bank began as a community project developed in 2011, registering as a charity in August in 2013 with the objective to prevent or relieve poverty or financial hardship in the Canterbury City Council district with the vision of food banks no longer being necessary. This objective is met by providing emergency food parcels and related house supplied to individuals and family groups in financial crisis. They also provide information about local services and facilities connected to those in need while campaigning on issues to prevent or relieve poverty in the UK, including initiating and running projects solely, and in collaboration with other charities, organisations and the media.

Liam Waghorn, Operations Manager at Canterbury Food Bank has commented “The generosity of donors like Craven Street Wealth helps us provide not just essential supplies but moments of joy for those struggling during the festive season. This year, we have distributed food parcels equivalent to 120,000 meals, ensuring vital support for families in need. Your support truly makes a difference to the lives of many in our community’. Corporate Social Responsibility committee member at Craven Street Wealth, Ruth Tomkin Munro shares “The work that Canterbury Food bank do to support the local community here in the city and surrounding areas is a real life line. Our staff are happy to help out in what ever small way we can in order to ease the pressures that so many feel at this time of year. Thank you for everything you do”!

Canterbury Food Bank is stocked entirely by the generosity of the local community and can be supported by the donation of items or cash to enable the charity to pay for their warehouse, van and other essential costs directly here.
