As it has become something of a tradition now, the Craven Street Wealth team have again collected items to donate to different calls for support.
With food price inflation hitting an alarming record high of 16.7% in the four weeks to 22 January 2023, according to the Guardian newspaper, the difficulties many people are having in coping with a cost of living crisis are highlighted, in addition to the strain affecting the support services trying to help.
The reverse advent calendar, championed by Ruth Tomkin-Munro involves the collecting and donating of items throughout November and early December from a list provided by food banks of mostly everyday essentials, ranging from boxes of cereal to shower gel and tinned food. Many of the team also donated items such as chocolate biscuits, advent calendars and mince pies to help make the festive season that little bit more enjoyable. Ruth knows “that everything is more expensive this year, but that also means the pressure on the food banks are more intense than ever!”
The collective efforts of the team were collected from the Graylaw House office by Canterbury Food Bank on 6th December, with other items being dropped off to St Mary the Virgin Church in Sellindge who had also recently requested help on their social media channels.
Both provide those in need with a food parcel to help make-ends-meet and relieve some of the financial pressure, with Canterbury Food Bank providing a parcel to last families for at least three days, even catering for special dietary requirements.
The efforts by the team were greatly appreciated with those team members not Canterbury-based donating to their own local food bank or similar schemes. Raising awareness through these initiatives can hopefully also help to also ensure that people do not wait until their cupboard is bare to ask for help.
